Born in Kerala in 1966, Mary John had four years of rigorous training in Mohiniyattam under Guru Kalamandalam Lathika, Kalamandalam Leelamma and Kalamandalam Hymavathy. She also studied Kuchipudi under Kalamandalam Presheeja and Kalamandalam Sridevi Gopinath. Her Mohiniyattam performances are directed by Kalamandalam Sathyabhama and Prof. N.K.V. Dave. Mery John is a famous Kathakali Chutti artist (make-up). She studied this discipline under Guru Kalamandalam Ram Mohan. In 1994, Mary john was awarded the Government of India Scholarship for Mohiniyattam and Chutti.
